In 1974 Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia was deposed in a revolution bringing to an end the centuries-old monarchy, his 34-year reign and the Orthodox church-state system. The revolution instituted Ethiopian Socialism which drew heavily from Marxist-Leninist ideology. The Marxist system came to an abrupt end in 1991 when President Mengistu Haile Mariam fled the country. This transition from monarchy to Marxism had a profound effect upon the relationship of church and state.
