An estimated 100,000 people thronged central Havana's Plaza of the Revolution on June 21 in an open air gathering that marked the close of a monthlong, islandwide Cuban Evangelical Celebration. Amid praises to Jesus Christ and lively gospel music, several Cuban evangelical leaders voiced clear support for the government of Fidel Castro, who was present at the rally. The Protestants also criticized the American embargo against the island and chided, in veiled terms, the Roman Catholic Church.
