The Biographical Dictionary of Christian Missions was published by Macmillan Reference, New York City, in November 1997. In retrospect I am tempted to affirm the saying quem dii oderunt, lexicographum fecerunt, loosely translated "those whom the gods wish to destroy, they make into dictionary editors" (Friedrich 1974: preface). The Biographical Dictionary was published seven years after I first conceived the idea for the Dictionary and five years after we opened the editorial office.
