Introduction

For Whom Is This Book ?

Pastor's Storybook is written in simple language for people who ... * do not have the Bible in their language, * need training urgently, * cannot afford to pay for training, „h prefer simple stories to long sermons. „h Pastor's Storybook is free and can be translated into any language. Why Use Stories ?

Pastor's Storybook explains great doctrines from the Bible that all Christian believe, without systematic analysis. This can help new believers and leaders to share biblical truth with others, in the way our Lord Jesus Christ did it.

All basic Bible truths grow out of historical events. The inspired comments of the prophets and apostles about those events give us our basic Christian theology. The Holy Spirit uses these Bible stories to bring people to repentance, to transform them, and to provide models for church ministries. The Bible itself lays a historical foundation for our beliefs and church practices. Even the Bible books of Romans and Hebrews were written to people who already knew the Bible stories upon which they are based. Those historical events include Adam and his fall, God's promise to Abraham to bless all nations, Abraham's offering of Isaac, Moses and the law, Aaron as the original high priest, David's victories, Jesus' birth, life, death, resurrection, and ascension, and the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost-plus many more.

How to Use This Book

If You Train New Pastors

Read the stories from the Bible with the new pastors, or, if the Bible is not translated into their language, read the stories to them. Help them to tell the stories to their people. Teach to them the explanations and instructions given in this book by Mr. Wise, and to avoid the mistakes done by Mr. Foolish. Mr. The characters called Mr. Wise, Mr. Foolish, Learner and Helper are not real people. They, and other characters that appear such as, represent types of people that are often mentioned in the Bible. The biblical characters, of course, were real people.

If You Are a New Pastor

Read and learn the stories. Tell the stories to the new believers and their families and friends. Explain to them what Mr. Wise says, and warn them not to do what Mr. Foolish does.

Pastor's Storybook has three sections. Start with the Section that fits your present need.

Use the stories in Section I, "Help People to Discover Christ", to help people to believe in Jesus Christ.

Use the stories in Section II, "Establish Churches that Obey Jesus", to start healthy churches and renew churches that want to grow as Christians by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Use the stories in Section III, "Develop the Basic Ministries of the Church", to train pastors to edify their people and develop the ministries that God requires for his churches.

If You Teach In a School

Pastors' Storybook was not written to be used as a textbook in a school. It was written to help train new pastors who serve new chuches. If you use it as a textbook, then you must do more than have students read it and write exams. You must also make starting a church or cell group part of the course. Instead of exams, students must give reports on what they said and did in their churches (Mark 6:30). There are 85 exercises in the Storybook. Each exercise can become the basis of a practical work assignment. You must do more than give a lecture about material in this book. You must have time with every student to help them make ministry plans and to hear their reports and questions.

Section I

HELP PEOPLE TO DISCOVER CHRIST

Jesus told a story about two builders. One was wise and built his house on rock. The other was foolish and built on sand. Let me introduce you to a man who is like the wise man in the story. He likes to hear God's word and puts it into practice. We call him Mr. Wise. He lives some distance away and comes by bus to Learner's community where he stays with a cousin and does evangelism. He arrives at Learner's woodworking shop and talks to him about our Lord Jesus Christ. Learner is sanding a table. "Mr. Wise says, "Let me tell you the wonderful news about another carpenter, Jesus." Learner frowns. "That religious talk is difficult for me, Mr. Wise." But Mr. Wise explains, "I will tell you the truth about God in stories, like Jesus did. They are easy to understand and remember, and you can tell these stories to your family and friends. These stories are not like stories that men make up themselves for entertaining their friends and children. They are real things that happened in history."

Another friend of Learner arrives, Mr. Foolish. He is a salesman for a company that sells everything except what you want. He is like the foolish builder in Jesus' story. He likes to do things his own way.

Mr. Foolish interrupts. "Learner, this man is teaching something new. We do not need any new religions here. We do not need to change the way we have lived for so many years. Now listen to me. I have a new soap you should buy. It smells like cinnamon. Here. Smell it."
