Martyrdom; Persecution

HONG KONG (Compass)--Anti-Christian groups in the East Indian state of Bihar attacked a group of Christian evangelists, killing their leader, Mangal Pande, and injuring five others seriously.

Pande, who worked with an independent group called the "Gospel Echoing Missionary Society," was conducting gospel meetings in Loihardaga in the Ranchi District when the attack occurred. Sources told Compass that anti-Christian groups attacked the evangelist and his team while they were sleeping. Pande died of his injuries. The others were hospitalized.

Police are investigating the incident, but no arrests have been made so far.

The Indian Mission Association is expected to take up the killing with the Minority Commission, a body set up by the government to look into atrocities committed against Christians and other religious groups.

Bihar is one of the largest and most lawless states in India. The problems in Bihar epitomize rural politics. Land is the arbiter: whoever controls the land commands political power. Nearly 41 percent of the population in the Bihar state live below the poverty line and most are illiterate.

In the past two years the church in Bihar has grown despite persecution. Several Indian mission groups are now working in Bihar and networking with mainline churches to evangelize the state.
